Once the Hungarian football team belonged among the best in the world (they were World Cup runners-up in 1938 and 1954, and three times winners of the Olympic Games in 1952, 1964 and 1968). Unfortunately these times are gone, but the atmosphere of today’s football matches is fantastic as well, especially when two age-old rival teams meet. If you want to experience this atmosphere, we give you some hints about which locations to visit in Budapest.

The stadium is the home of the Hungarian national team. It was named after one of the best players and the most famous Hungarian of the 20th century: Ferenc PuskĂĄs. PuskĂĄs began his career in Kispesti AC (later Budapesti HonvĂ©d), where he was top scorer four times, and with this club he also won the national championship five times. In the Hungarian national team he scored 84 goals in 85 matches, and he was a winner of the Olympic Games and a runner-up in the World Cup. Later, as a player at Real Madrid, "Pancho Puskas” was four times a top scorer, six times a champion and three times the winner and twice the runner-up in the European Champion Clubs’ Cup (the forerunner of today’s Champions League). During the European Cup final in 1960, which Real Madrid won by 7-3, he scored 4 goals. As a coach he led his teams to win the championships in Australia and Greece. In 2009 a new award named after him for the season's more beautiful goal.(Fifa Puskas Award).
Ferenc PuskĂĄs memorials
If you are not only interested in football matches, but you would also like to visit the memorials connected to PuskĂĄs, then beside the national stadium we recommend you to visit St. Stephen’s Basilica, where the tomb of the great champion, who died in 2006, can be found. Furthermore, there is a relief about him at 1-3 PuskĂĄs Ferenc Street in Kispest, near the Bozsik Stadium, which was named after his best friend, and which is the home of PuskĂĄs’ old club.

Water sports
Kayak / canoe
These water sports are very popular spare-time activities in Hungary. In the last four Olympic Games kayak and canoe proved to be the most successful sports for Hungarian competitors. With 19 gold medals, 27 silver medals and 25 bronze medals won in these two sports, kayak and canoe possess a distinguished place on the absolute rank of Hungarian Olympic sports. Taking advantage of the opportunities provided by the Danube, many people choose these sports as spare-time activities. Popular rental places, clubs and instruction places are most likely to be found near the Roman Embankment, the bay of Ăjpest, at Margaret Island and in Csepel.

Swimming and Waterpolo
The Hungarian team performs legendarily well in swimming competitions during the Olympics. There are hardly any Olympic Games at which Hungarian swimmers received no medals at all. The first Hungarian winner of an Olympic game was also a swimmer, Alfréd Hajós, in 1898, at Athens. Perhaps the swimmers with the most outstanding performance are Krisztina Egerszegi, who can boast five gold medals, and Tamås Darnyi, who was champion four times.
Currently the Hungarian male water polo team is the most successful national water polo team in the world. They won the Olympics nine times – out of which they received the gold medal three times in a row in the last three Olympic Games in a unique way (2000 Sydney, 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing), led by the coach DĂ©nes KemĂ©ny. The team won the European Championship twelve times, the World Championship and the World League twice, and they are multiple silver and bronze medallists.
If you fancy about match days you can find information at the site of the Hungarian Waterpolo Federation: www.mvlsz.hu. Also there are information about swimming and waterpolo lessons and courses with schedules and opening times at the pools' sites.
