Budapest Film - Free time

Just as there are those who want to relax, there are those who like to be active when on holiday. Some like engaging in sport; others prefer to watch. And there are others still who enjoy shopping and sitting in cafés. In Budapest there is all this, and much more besides. From morning till night the parks (particularly the Margaret Island) are full of joggers. There are popular cycle paths springing up. The little lake in City Park is a lovely place in summer for a gentle row; in the winter it is the province of ice skaters. In the winter there is also sledging and skiing at Sváb Hill.

  • Gastronomy

The great traditions of Hungarian cuisine have, in the last ten to fifteen years, successfully mingled with modern sophistication. At its roots, classic Hungarian gastronomy is nothing less than French bonne bouches reaching Hungary via Austria and mixing with ancient Hungarian peasant dishes - many of them originated in Asia - offering every...

  • Shopping

Two elements of the Budapest shopping experience that really should not be missed out on are a visit to one of the market halls and a trip out to the Ecseri Flea Market. But then there is also much to be discovered by taking a walk down Falk Miksa utca. This Pest street, like certain areas in Paris and Rome, has become a centre for antique shops.

  • With Children

Happily for parents, come rain or shine, come winter or summer, indoors and out, there is always plenty to keep children occupied in Budapest. Here are just a few examples. For the brave, try a ride in a hot-air balloon from the roof of the WestEnd City Centre shopping centre. For the curious, try the Zoo: there you can observe at close quarters...

  • Parks

Budapest’s favourite park is without a doubt the Margaret Island, named after Princess Margaret who lived in a convent here in the thirteenth century (the ruins of which can still be seen). The former water tower is a UNESCO protected monument and is now an unusual exhibition space. The open-air theatre is a popular venue for performances of...

  • Sporting facilities

Hungarians will relate – slightly ruefully – that when it comes to football their nation once was up there with the world’s best. Whilst this is no longer the case, football is still extremely popular, and there is a good atmosphere at most matches, particularly between old rivals.

  • Night life

Many parts of Budapest are beautifully floodlit at night. There is also plenty of night life. The Las Vegas Casino (V. Roosevelt tér 2, Tel. 317-6022) is open day and night, and the Tropicana Casino (V. Vigadó u. 2, Tel. 266-3062) from 11 a.m. until 6 a.m. The Moulin Rouge (VI. Nagymező u. 17, Tel. 373-0577) hosts revue and cabaret but is...
