Rembrandt 40030/06/2006. - 29/10/2006.Exhibition Museum of Fine Arts Heroes' Square In 2006, the more important museums of the world will celebrate the 400th anniversary of the Almost all the copperplate engravings made by Rembrandt’s own hand – more than 200 sheets – can be found in the Museum’s collection of graphic art, and these will be supplemented in a suitable way by important drawings by the artist. We have asked the loan of four highly significant Rembrandt drawings from the Albertina Museum in Vienna, and the exhibition will be enriched by means of paintings, too. Some copper engravings feature in the collection in a number of printings, enabling us to follow the evolution of individual compositions and the process of artistic creation.
The last monographic Rembrandt exhibition at Budapest’s Museum of Fine Arts was held in 1969. Since then a new generation has grown up that has not yet seen these masterpieces, with the exception of the few sheets that have featured in other, more general, exhibitions put on by the Museum.
The 2006 show will present the artist’s oeuvre in chronological order for the most part, grouped according to theme.
The organizer of the exhibition and the author of the catalogue is Teréz Gerszi, Ph.D. of the Hungarian Academy of Science and member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.
