Hungarian Gulyas

When we are in Budapest we devoure Hungarian Gulyás at almost every meal, savoring every bite. I am not a student of Hungarian cuisine but I have learned a thing or two about this classic dish. For starters, everyone in Hungary has their own idea of how to make Gulyás which is actually pronounced GOO-yash, no L.

A tale of two cities

This time of year as winter yields to spring, Budapest is set alight. However it does not matter what month you visit the Hungarian capital – spa baths and spires, hearty food and quirky shops all make it an intriguing escape. Budapest is often referred to as a big bathtub as it has sulphuric waters that bubble up from the thermal springs below the city. This asset alone makes it one of the best places in the world for a good soak Add to that a direct two hour flight from Dublin, reasonable prices and a stunning setting, and you can see why it takes little convincing to visit this dynamic Eastern European capital.

Budapest is the capital of Hungary

The lead photo you see here may not look too exciting, but it was taken from a special place.  Just hours before I left for Munich, I took one last walk around Roosevelt Ter and across the Chain Bridge, pausing at the center vantage point.  I was immediately reminded of our very very first trip to Budapest (the one with the Tokaji wine, before the direct flight mentioned here, and pre-goulash).

Night sights - floodlit city on the Danube

Budapest on the Danube is a beautiful city, and even more so in the evening, when the major buildings, monuments and streets are floodlit. Budapest has plenty to offer people who wish to take an evening walk - the river, the decorative bridges, the castle district, and the wealth of fantastic buildings in many building styles. It all adds up to plenty of brilliant photo opportunities. And the tourist district is also safe in the evening.

Party recovery in the city of baths

Sometimes called the "city of spas," Budapest is home to over a dozen thermal spas. The bathhouses make perfect destinations for weary tourists, sore backpackers, and families - as well as hung-over concert-goers. I visited two of Budapest's biggest and most visited baths, Szechenyi and Gellert last northern summer. They were filled with 20-somethings wearing bracelets from the annual Sziget festival, a seven-day music event that's one of the biggest in Europe.

Should you travel abroad for medical treatment?

Destinations vary too. Hungary is the most popular place to have treatment, especially dental work, followed by Cyprus and India. "The facilities in Budapest are fantastic and you'd never find anything as good in the UK," says Keith Pollard, managing director of Treatment Abroad.

3 perfect days in Budapest

Flick through any history of Budapest and it’s abundantly clear that for every flourishing of thearts and architecture, for every golden decade filled with pastries and sweet coffee and endless conversation, residents have had to endure less lovely periods. It’s no wonder Budapestians have a reputation for telling it like it is. Suffering invasions by the Turks, the Germans and the Communists, the city’s denizens developed a taste for both decadence and rebellion, tempered by a hefty dash
of sunny resignation.

How do you leave the past behind when it keeps finding ways to get to your heart?

I went to Budapest with my school, as the graduate student association paid for the flight and the hostel. I’m not a big picture taker as I like being in the moment rather than documenting it, but I tend to regret that later when I want to go back and remember or share more visuals with all the lovely people that actually read this thing…anyways- Yeah, seriously Budapest has become one of my top favorite cities in the world, and only about a two hour flight or so away from Paris I would totally recommend it for a weekend get away.

Healing powers of Hungary

There are more than 60 thousand mineral springs and thermal springs 1150 in Hungary. It would be foolish not to these riches, that is why Hungary has built 55 water hospitals and 67 spa hotels here, to be used. They also develop medical and health tourism.

The country's capital, Budapest, is the leader in this field. This is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the first spa capital of the world (there are about 130 hot springs) to be found here.Budapest can offer about 70 spas and public baths:

City Snapshot: Budapest

Virtually five years ago, I visited the beautiful city of Budapest. This was before I started Penelope Red; - so for me, Budapest was the most unique city from all the others I had been to thus far. I can't remember the names of the sites, or facts about the city, but I do remember feeling lucky to have visited... especially since it was not overrun by foreigners like most other European cities. Budapest still had it's own unique flavour. Although the old Austria/Hungary ties are still there (you can really see it in the architecture on one side of the town especially), there is a definite Eastern feel that you don't get in any of the West European cities. It is really hard to describe- you really just have to be there.

Thermal Spas of Budapest

Thermal spas are a big part of life in Central Europe and a must for visitors. This is especially so in Budapest which was prestigiously ranked as the “city of spas”.

What makes this oasis of spas unique and amazing is the presence of thermal springs right in the city center! Altogether there are 118 springs and boreholes that supply the spas and baths of the area with 15.4 million gallons of water daily…that’s a whole lot of relaxation going on!

Hungarian Food

Eating in Hungary has been quite a new, and for the most part delicious, experience. Probably Hungary's most famous specialty is its ubiquitous paprika, which comes in various degrees of spiciness, including edes (sweet) and csipos (hot!). One of our classmates had an... educational experience with paprika paste at our class luncheon Saturday at St. Jupat, a good Hungarian eatery with enormous portions, reasonable prices. In addition to other standard American varieties of the potato chip like cheese, sour cream and onion, and barbeque, the shelves of Hungarian stores are the home to two distinct flavors: paprika and bacon. The paprika flavor is not at all that surprising when it can be found at almost every corner here in Budapest. In America, many use ketchup to add a little flavor to fries, hamburgers, and to some, almost anything. However, in Hungary, people find that adding paprika gives their meal exactly the right flavor.

More information about the adventures in Budapest

"We’ve been to a lot of places, but we’ve never seen any other big city with so many spas. Commercial Pest and residential Buda, together with the River Danube and its islands, offer a great variety of recreation for the mind and body – on foot, by bike, overground or underground."

 A Day at the Zoo

The group also soon discovered that the zoo is less strict than the zoos in America. They found less distance placed between the animals and the visitors themselves. They found the giraffes in their indoor shelter from the cold with only a set of bars separating these magestic animals from their observers. A group of Hungarian visitors simply walked up, held out some food, and the giraffes gladly accepted the snack from the giving hands.

Spa trek: Bathhouses’ healing powers enrich visit to Budapest

Sometimes called the “city of spas,” Budapest is home to more than a dozen thermal spas. The bathhouses make perfect destinations for weary tourists, sore backpackers and families - as well as hung-over concertgoers. I visited two of Budapest’s biggest and most visited baths, Szechenyi and Gellert last summer. They were filled with 20-somethings wearing bracelets from the annual Sziget festival, a seven-day music event that’s one of the biggest in Europe.

After this we headed to the Kiraly baths, which has alternate days for men only and for women only.
We also soon realized the bathhouse was a gay hangout. We’re not in that target audience, but it was no big deal. Then we observed some behavior that would have made me uncomfortable in a mixed-gender spa.

Budapest bound

Courtyard shops are common. I’m armed with a 50mm so the focal length doesn’t allow me to easily show you how these shops squeeze into the tiniest backstreet corners in-between apartments. I did spot one or two impressive ornate arcades too. Budapest appears to be in a transition commercially, where the arcades are emptying, traders favouring the shopping centres. This is one such arcade above; a solitary shop illuminates a small segment of what looked like a hub of commerce once.

Budapest day 2

A brisk walk away, crossing the Danube into Buda, you find the Great Market Hall. Well, actually initially you find the university, which in facade terms from my memory, didn’t seem too dissimilar to the market building. Couple of seconds inside the wrong building and it was all quite obvious. Everyone looked studious and there wasn’t a carrot or hanging meat to be seen

 The Urban Birder in Budapest

...Gerard and I spent the next day visiting the various noteworthy urban sites within the city. I started my education in his local patch at Normafa, some woods above the city in the Buda Hills. We saw scampering Red Squirrels, listened to (and occasionally glimpsed) wailing Black Woodpeckers, found a garrulous family party of Middle Spotted Woodpeckers and stopped to watch a pair of Collared Flycatchers attending to their hidden nestlings. Later, we were in Farkasréti Cemetery in the 12th District of the city.

Budapest goes retro

Twenty years ago this summer, revolution hung in the air in Budapest. The Hungarian capital was overrun by East Germans looking for a way to reach Austria, and from there the West. Ostensibly ‘on holiday’, they camped out on Margaret Island, waiting on news and planning escape.
