2 September 1686, Monday - Nicolaus
This is a cruel, damned, miserable, glorious, bloody day: Buda is ours!!! All morning we were making preparations for the last attack. To make everything ready and fit and to get let alone by the relief troop we had to work a lot. We sent strong troops of mounted men to the hills above the sentry that showed a lot from themselves. Our artillery men fired the walls from 40 cannons and during the intervals they performed some false alerts. These were supposed to hide our effort to take up to the starting position the units assigned to attack. But Abdurrahman was not a beginner and seemingly suspected what was going on so he started a mine that supposed to hit the Esztergom Bastion to blow up our men in our gathering place.
1 September 1686, Sunday - Nicolaus
Probably this is the last day. Probably we are going to make our last effort. Our preparations are worthy of these. Now every artilleryman is busy and the boys are literally firing from every cannon. The mortars cover the entire north part of the castle, the carthauns are demolishing the palisades and where it’s needed they are hewing from the walls - but there aren’t too many places to do it.
31 August 1686, Saturday – Iohannes
Everybody feels the tense of the last charge. Everybody feels that it is very near, what we have wanted for 77 days, what we came here for, from the 4 corners of the Christian world. The men are getting more and more impatient they want to win more and more. The soldiers are talking about loot at every moment. By the way everybody wants to push their fortune here.

30 August 1686, Friday - Gregorius
I’m dedicating this day to regeneration. I had a good night sleep then I went to a thermal bath. I’ve really needed this rest. It’s been more than two months here in Buda, more than two month since I’ve heard the roar of the cannons, the bugle-call. It’s been two months since I’ve smelled the grubbed earth’s, the gunpowder’s and the dead corps’ smell. It’s been too much, simply too much. A few more days, not more than three and then it’s over. Either I’ll capture the city or I’ll die.
29 August 1686, Thursday - Nicolaus
Victory!!! What a great victory!!! We have stood this test as well! During a very long and bloody day we knocked out the relief troop. At dawn we woke to the messenger who arrived from the Duke: About 3-4000 Turks and Tartars are gathering somewhere in the valley of Saint Paul’s stream, so let’s be on the alert! In that minute some cannon-shot and rattle of gunfire were heard from the circumvallation by the Danube and then some horrible shouting. Alert at once, but by then everybody was awake and the all camp jumped on their feet. Just in time because they were approaching like a storm.
28 August 1686, Wednesday – Petrus
There is a lull before the storm. Everybody is preparing their equipment, their thought are already about the fight. We are between life and death. The news are spreading, the escapees caught by our men say that the last test (the Turkish trying to enter the castle) is approaching. In the letter of Abdurrahman intended to the Grand Vizier is written that the garrison consists of 200 able men.
27 August 1686, Tuesday – Petrus
Every eye is on our artillery, it depends on them when they will weaken the walls to such an extent that we can start the big charge full of hope. Thanks to their persistence and the considerable amount of gunpowder and cannonball they managed to increase the size of the gap in the second northern wall to stone’s throw-wide.
26 August 1686, Monday – Iohannes
I am sure that we are preparing for the last charge. The castle of Buda is crippled, there can’t be any material that is flammable because a fire rarely breaks out. Our artillery batteries keep destroying the walls and all positions from where the defenders could start anything.
25 August 1686, Sunday - Gregorius
I have already praised our enemy many times. Their fighting moral is fantastic. If it wasn’t so we would have already captured Buda for a long time. Luckily for us, we do not lag behind as bravery is concerned. One proof for this claim is the fact that the girder bridge we are working on is almost ready.
24 August 1686, Saturday – Petrus
Based on the news of our scouts it seems that the Grand Vizier will leave the camp tonight. We did not rest, either. The infantry is all prepared, the cavalry also took their positions. Duke Charles decided to shoot the western castle wall next to the Esztergom Bastion, beyond the second wall in the north so that he could fight the Turkish defence from here during the next charge. The artillery was shooting the wall with 4 cannons, about to crack it open.
