17 June 1686, Monday – Nicolaus
We spent the evening at Michéles’. Cheerful company. We pulled his leg because of his diary. Unfortunately at the end of our joking - I can’t recall all the details of the event after the wine consumed - all four of us are going to keep a diary. We have drawn all the days until the end of September. We have no plan to that case if one of us dies or if we stay longer.
18 June 1686, Tuesday – Iohannes
With great enthusiasm did everybody learn the fact that Prince Eugene seized Pest yesterday. The blessing of the Lord of hosts is upon us and by His grace we will succeed this year. Not like two years ago! We arrived at Buda one month earlier, we have the numbers, we have better equipment. We will get Buda back from the Turkish.
19 June 1686, Wednesday - Petrus
The new day found us at the line of the ditch being made at the walls of Víziváros. We have finished a considerable amount of job, which brought us nearer to our goal. The defenders don’t like the blockade very much therefore they seize every opportunity to make us lose interest in it: they shoot the people building the ditch effectively with every kind of weapon they have. The high command ordered a battery consisting of 6 assault cannons to help us.
20 June 1686, Thursday – Gregorius
Today at the evening camp-fire a debate broke out between José and Günther – one is a Spaniard, the other is a Prussian volunteer. The debate went about the decision of the Duke of Lorraine, who took part personally in the clash earlier this day. José said it was the right thing to do while Günter thinks it was a mistake.
21 June 1686, Friday – Gregorius
In the past days I’ve felt constant sleepiness and I’m afraid it won’t change for a while. When I have a few free hours in daytime to rest, the air is too warm to have a nap. During the night when the heat is less unbearable, the unceasing bombardment keep me awake. On the other hand, there are many things to do instead of sleeping since we are behind with the digging out of the trenches, so we’ve made efforts to catch up.
22 June 1686, Saturday – Petrus
Fighting against the heat of the sun and the rocky soil, we could make a decent progress in building the ditch. On the northern side the Viziváros is now only a stone’s throw away. We have high hopes: the castle wall is almost within arm’s reach. Our people continued digging to prepare for the charge.
23 June 1686, Sunday - Nicolaus
Long and exhausting day. In the north within a gunshot from the town-walls the first contravallation has been completed. Now this is the starting point of our attack, but by the time we’re going to fight at the foot of the castle this should be the last point that catches the sorties. Our camp is being taken more ahead.
24 June 1686, Monday - Nicolaus
This is a successful day with lots of surprise. The greatest news is not occupying the Víziváros but an excellent forey organised by a hussar captain called János Bottyán. He has already proved himself to be useful by routing a bigger troop of mounted men approaching the castle. This Bottyán is a typical warrior of this long war that has been fought by Hungarians since the beginning of the Ottoman conquest.
25 June 1686, Tuesday - Petrus
The Turkish attack is becoming stronger. They keep on attacking us, but we must not surrender, we continued building the mound on the northern side. The ditch starts at Viziváros, one could go 200 feet far on the rocky soil towards the castle. We have been ordered to approach the part of the wall that goes from the Bécsi gate to the Esztergom bastion, preparing for the most desirable battle position.
26 June 1686, Wednesday - Iohannes
We have been shovellong all day. Two, man-deep and 8-feet-wide ditches. The whole army have been working on the rocky soil for two weeks now. We are making progress, but very slowly. We have only had Viziváros for two days, we haven’t managed to build the ditches yet.
